History of Gambling is an independent English-language publication about the history of games of chance. It explains where the games came from, how the great gambling houses and cities grew, how governments banned, taxed and licensed gambling, and the mathematics and people behind it.
How the stories are made
Every editorial story is built on named sources: encyclopedias, museum collections, government and court documents, and published histories. They are listed at the end of each article. Where historians disagree, or where a well-known story is a legend, the article says so rather than repeating it as fact.

Errors are corrected in the article, and the update date changes. Write through the contact page.

Articles from contributors and partners appear in News, in the Online & Betting section and in International, separately from the editorial stories. The short essays of the site's first edition are kept in the archive.

History of Gambling does not run games, accept bets or hold a gambling licence, and nothing on it is financial or legal advice. Gambling can be addictive; if it stops being fun, organisations such as the National Council on Problem Gambling (US) and GamCare (UK) offer free help.
